Your deck is the perfect place to hold outdoor barbecues and parties. But high foot traffic, exposure to UV rays, and the occasional grease spill can take its toll on your deck’s wooden surface. Luckily, damage to the surface is usually cosmetic and can be easily prevented through proper maintenance.
Enchantment Roofing, your go-to company for modified bitumen roofing, shares some maintenance tips below.
Keep Your Wooden Deck Dry
All types of wood are susceptible to rot if they stay wet long enough. As a general rule, your deck shouldn’t stay wet for a day or longer after rainfall.
Dew drops from overhanging trees and shrubbery might fall on to your deck. You should also trim overgrown trees and bushes to prevent your deck from getting wet.
Remove Debris Lodged Between the Floorboards
Apart from being unsightly, debris and foliage lodged between the floorboards can trap moisture, leaving your wooden deck susceptible to rot. Use a putty knife to remove the debris. As for leaves and other debris on the roof, a sturdy broom or leaf blower should suffice.
Use a Commercial Deck Cleaner
After clearing the debris, clean the wooden surface using a commercial deck cleaner, preferably one that contains sodium percarbonate. We recommend using a stiff fiber brush to scrub the wood grain.
Take note that you need to take your time while cleaning the wooden deck. Clean small areas of the deck and allow them to dry.
Remove the Old Finish Using a Stripper
A new finish can make a wooden deck look brand new. Just like painting metal roofing systems, however, you’d need to remove the old layer using a stripper before you can apply a new one. Before using the formula, test it on a small area to see how the wooden surface reacts. When you remove the stripper, it’s best to wash the deck and the surrounding plants using a pressure washer.
It’s easy to miss signs of rot and other signs of damage, however. That’s why it’d be better to have an experienced contractor conduct routine inspections on your deck.
